The Handy Help Service is an accident prevention and small household repairs service for people over 60 in north Sefton. The service was set up in 2000 to meet a major Health Action Zone aim in that it should reduce the amount of people attending Accident and Emergency, due to a reduction in accidents. The main aims of the service are to help prevent accidents in the home, increase security and to help people live independently in their own homes for as long as possible. The service is jointly funded by Sefton Social Services and the Sefton Primary Care Trust. The service achieves these aims by providing help in the following areas: - Identifying and rectifying possible hazards in the home such as uneven floor coverings and small electrical jobs. - Prevention of falls by providing help with work involving step ladders such as replacing curtain rails, replacing light bulbs and smoke alarm batteries. - Increasing security by fitting of door chains, bolts and spy holes and ensuring that outside lighting is functional. - Prevention of falls by fitting of grab rails and stair rails. - Providing relevant information about services that are available and signposting to other organisations. Small repairs are carried out with a nominal charge of between £2.00 - £10.00, and any materials required to complete the works will be charged at cost. Grab rails and stair rails are fitted for free however donations are gratefully received for sustainability of the project.
